![]() I have read the Columbia Accident Investigation report, and what I took away from that was that the crew were most likely unconscious quite early on. Therefore, it is now believed that the the Challenger crew (or at least the ones who were correctly sealed inside their spacesuits) survived the breakup of the orbiter, and were only killed by the impact of the crew compartment hitting the water at a high rate of speed. With the advent of better technology to analyze photos and film of the incident, it was discovered that the crew compartment can be seen, completely intact, falling away from the debris cloud.Īlso, it has been revealed that when the astronauts' bodies were recovered, all but one of them were wearing their sealed spacesuits with helmets - which actually would have given them some protection from depressurization - and they had used the spacesuits' breathing systems after the breakup. If I understand correctly, it is generally accepted now that at least some of the Challenger crew were alive after the orbiter broke up. To add to what /u/svarogteuse was saying: I personally believe Columbia was the worse mission to be on, but was either actually survivable, and which would’ve been worse to have been on? I know it’s a pretty morbid question, but it would be helpful for the purpose of writing this report. Additionally, during the actual disaster, Challenger was instant and there would not have been even the slightest indication anything was wrong to the crew, but the Columbia crew had to have realized something had gone seriously wrong for at least the final few minutes before disintegration. A ton of people in our class chose Challenger as the go to AE disaster, but our group chose Columbia arguing that it was the more serious incident of the two especially considering that even after the triggering event (Challenger O-Ring, Columbia foam strike) Challenger was doomed but Columbia could’ve been saved as many now believe that contrary to early predictions, Atlantis indeed could’ve rescued the Columbia crew. Long story short, in our AE program at college, our class is required to do a long-term project by doing a an ethics write up on a case study about a major ethics lapse in the AE field.
